Veronica and Jane met when they both worked for the University of the Highlands and Islands project. They found that although they came from different places and had different educational experiences, their basic philosophies of work and education were very similar. An excellent working relationship that utilised their complementarity seemed a good basis for business and so they decided to be brave and work for themselves through Glenaffric Ltd.
I was born in London but have lived in Scotland for all of my adult life, coming north to train as a nurse in Edinburgh. I developed an interest in nursing research, and then returned to formal education with a postgraduate diploma in systems analysis and design. Unusually, my part-time distance undergraduate degree was undertaken following these periods of supervised research and postgraduate study.
I have lectured in information technology and applied computing, managed a busy and evolving learning resource centre, and had responsibility for implementing an integrated Highland-wide library management system with electronic learning resources. Following my masters degree in education, my research interests have focused mainly on systems thinking and the design of meaningful learning experiences.
I am an excellent cook and enjoy experimenting with oriental ingredients and garden produce. I also like cycling, canoeing and hillwalking.
I was born and educated in Glasgow, studied French and German at Glasgow University, and completed a doctorate on Goethe's autobiography in 1991. I have taught languages in further and higher education, and in the mid 1990s, left the classroom for academic administration, curriculum structure and design.
I have diverse research interests, and have published articles and book chapters on eighteenth century German literature and philosophy, on the literature and society of the last years of the GDR and after the unification of Germany, and on curriculum structures and quality frameworks.
Living and working in the Scottish Highlands allows me to indulge a passion for hillwalking (140+ Munros and counting!). I am also a keen organic gardener.
